`Insecure atmosphere in the city due to the sealing drive'

  • Fifteen Congress MLAs have approached Delhi Assembly Speaker for security
  • Prem Singh has written a letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit about the MLAs' demand

NEW DELHI: Fifteen Congress MLAs have approached Delhi Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh and stated that they feared for their lives due to the insecure atmosphere prevailing in the city as a result of the ongoing sealing drive in the Capital. Seeking Mr. Prem Singh's intervention, these legislators have sought security cover to safeguard their lives and property.

Supporting the contention of the Congress MLAs, Mr. Prem Singh has written a letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit stating that he had received several representations from the Congress MLAs who had met him and handed over a memorandum seeking provision of security for smooth functioning and discharge of their duties.

The MLAs have expressed apprehension that the present chaos and tension prevailing in the city was making them insecure and as they had to move out of their residences at odd hours to different localities, there is always the fear of anti-social elements taking advantage of the situation and targeting them.

"The situation is highly insecure and there is a sense of fear in our minds that is leading to hurdles in discharge of the duties,'' the MLAs have written.

Mr. Singh said the demand raised by the MLAs was genuine and their request for providing security, as is the practice in other States, should be taken up at the appropriate level.

If other States are providing security for their MLAs then why are members in Delhi not being provided with adequate security.

Those who have signed the memorandum include Ramvir Singh Bidhuri (NCP), Anil Bhardwaj, Bhisham Sharma, Mahabal Mishra, Shadi Ram, Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Surinder Kumar, Surinder Pal Singh Bittoo, Jile Singh Chauhan, Charan Singh Kandera, Rajesh Jain, Vijay Singh Lochav, Vir Singh Dhingan, Rajesh Lilothia, Baljore Singh and Brahm Pal.
