Youngsters, SAI Dharwad bag titles

Gulbarga: Youngsters Sports Club, Bangalore and Sports Authority of India (SAI), Dharwad walked away with the team honours in the under-20 boys' and girls' sections respectively as the curtain came down on the State Junior athletics championship at the Chandrashekar Patil Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Vanitha Rathod of Dharwad set the second meet record on the final day of the championship when she heaved the hammer to a new high of 39.03 metres bettering Sharmila Urs' mark of 36.88 metres. Vanitha, coached by her brother Sunil Rathod, had a previous best of 32 plus but showed remarkable improvement here.

Best athletes

Rebecca Jose, with a 12.4 seconds effort in the girls' under-16 100 metres, also caught the eye. She was a good 10 metres ahead of her second placed runner by the 60 metres mark and breasted the tape in style. Rebecca's effort won her the best athlete's award in the girls' under-16 section.

Besides Sheetal Kumar, another notable athlete to hit the limelight was BSC's Nikkin Thimmaiah who ran a splendid 400m in the boys' under-16 section on Saturday and brought the curtains down on the events on Sunday with a 11.6 seconds effort in the 100 metres dash.

Natasha Sagar and Shilpa Sundar also came performed impressively in the under-18 and under-20 sections ahead of the Junior Nationals to be held at Bangalore's Sree Kanteerava Stadium, this month end.
