Official donates part of reward money

BANGALORE: Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) Shankar M. Bidari on Tuesday said he had donated Rs. 85 lakh of the Rs. 1.6-crore cash reward that was given to him in recognition of his services as Commander of the Special Task Force that was engaged in anti-Veerapan operations.

Mr. Bidari told presspersons here that he had donated Rs. 50 lakh to the Karnataka State Police Children's Residential School in Dharwad. On his request the State Government has agreed to name the school after the late A.N. Muttanna, former Principal Secretary (Home and Transport).

"Mr. Muttanna had given a lot of support to the forces during our operation between 1990 and 2004," Mr. Bidari said.

He said he would soon present gold and silver articles worth Rs. 20 lakh to Chamundeshwari Temple in Mysore, Bannariamman Temple in Periyar District of Tamil Nadu and Malai Mahadeshwara Temple in Chamarajanagar district. Mr. Bidari said he had donated Rs. 10 lakh to Basappa Memorial Hospital of Mysore for giving free treatment to the police personnel injured during the operations.

After paying for legal expenses and other intelligence purposes, he was left with Rs. 15 lakh, Mr. Bidari said.
