TANA essay contest

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Association of North America (TANA) will conduct a Telugu essay-writing contest for degree and PG students and teachers. Topics will be `Teluguku nenenduku abhinandistanu' for students and `Telugu managada' for teachers.

Idea Cellular distinction

HYDERABAD: Leading GSM (Global Standard for Mobile Communication) major Idea Cellular on Friday announced that it had crossed the 15-lakh mobile subscriber base in the State and had achieved the highest growth rate amongst telecom players in Andhra Pradesh.

CITU dharna

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers' Union, Andhra Pradesh Community Health Workers' Union and United Electricity Employees' Union, all affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, will stage dharnas before district Collectorates on November 27 to press their demands.

Tamil Nadu request on Telugu Ganga

HYDERABAD: Tamil Nadu has requested the Andhra Pradesh Government not to release more water from the Telugu Ganga to cater to the drinking water needs of Chennai.

The request was made because the Poondi reservoir, which serves the drinking water needs of Chennai, was full owing to heavy rain in its catchment. - Special Correspondent

Constable in custody

TIRUMALA: The TTD vigilance and security officials on Friday took into custody an armed reserve constable M. T. Prakash for allegedly entering into the main temple complex in an inebriated state.

According to temple sources, he entered the temple complex through the restricted Mahadwaram on the pretext of securing permission for purchase of `laddus'. The TTD Vigilance and Guard Officer also recovered tobacco and cigarettes from him. He was sent to SVRR hospital for medical check-up. - Staff Reporter

MPs' plea to Centre

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India on Friday urged the Centre to restore the Hyderabad State freedom fighters' screening committee and process the applications.

Drawing attention to the plight of the freedom fighters who took part in the struggle against the Nizam, the CPI MPs said Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil had assured to restore the committee but that had not been done so far. They also petitioned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who promised to discuss the issue with the Home Minister. - Special Correspondent

25 students taken ill

NALGONDA: Twenty-five students of the Government Primary School fell ill after consuming mid-day meal at Sobhanadripuram in Ramannapet mandal on Friday. The students developed nausea and uneasiness after reportedly consuming duck eggs. They were rushed to the civil hospital at Ramannapet. Case registered against doctor

ADILABAD: A case under sections of rape and SC, ST Atrocities Prevention Act was registered by the Nirmal Town Police against Vijay Kumar Reddy, a private doctor, on Friday. A woman employee of the doctor had lodged a complaint of harassment at work place by the doctor, according to the police. -Staff Reporter

Folk festival

ADILABAD: The regional folk and cultural festival will be held on November 27 and 28 at the BGR Gardens here. The festival will be organised by Nehru Yuvak Kendra (NYK). T.V. Vidyasagar Rao, NYK coordinator told reporters on Friday that about 100 artistes will participate in the festival. This festival was being organised to highlight traditional folk forms so that they could be preserved. - Staff Reporter

Blood donation camp

NALGONDA: The local branch of the Andhra Bank organised a blood donation camp in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to mark the foundation day of the bank on Thursday. Bank manager B. Vijayalakshmi said, "The Andhra Bank has been in the forefront in offering best services to its customers." Apart from the bank employees, some customers also donated blood. -Staff Reporter

Donations for visually challenged

NALGONDA: Cadets of the 31st Andhra Battalion of NCC took out a rally and collected donations for the visually challenged persons in Nalgonda on Friday. In a press release, NCC officer P. Satti Reddy said that the programme was taken up as part of the NCC Day celebrations from November 24 to 26. The amount that was being collected would be given away to the organisers of Surdasbhavan, a home for visually challenged children in the town.

Hospital to be beautified

Sangareddy: Medak district Collector B. Venkatesam suggested the development of a green belt inside the APVVP Hospital for the mentally ill patients here on Friday. Addressing a small function , the Collector said that a nursery could be raised near the centre where the mentally ill destitute were housed by an NGO. He asked the citizens to inform the details of destitute to the District Medical Officer so that they could be rehabilitated at the asylum. -Staff Reporter

land rights

Sangareddy: The Medak district committee members of the Kulavivaksha Vyatirka Porata Sangham has submitted a memorandum to Joint Collector Vani Mohan demanding restoration of land rights to the farmers whose land has been taken through alleged false means. KVPS district member R. Lakshman told the Joint collector that the farmers mostly Dalits have no other source of income. The Joint Collector has assured them that efforts are being made to ascertain the facts. -Staff Reporter

Bus runs over student

KADAPA: An Intermediate second year student V. Rajasekhar Reddy of Archana Junior College in Rayachoti town was run over by an APSRTC bus on Friday. He died soon after he was admitted to the Rayachoti Government Hospital. -Staff Reporter

Two women held, arrack seized

KADAPA: Excise officials arrested two women Kotwal Sabunnisa and V. Subhdramma in Rayachoti town and seized 20 litres of ID arrack from them on Friday. The Excise officials had conducted raids at villages in Rayachoti, Tsundupalle, Sambepalle and Chinnamandem mandals. They also destroyed 10,390 litres of jaggery wash and seized 30 litres of ID arrack. -Staff Reporter

Man killed as auto overturns

KURNOOL: One person died and two others were injured when an autorickshaw overturned at Tirumalnagar in Adoni town on Friday. The victim was identified as Hanumanthu (35) of Chinna Kadubur. -Special Correspondent

MSP sought for sugarcane

TIRUPATI: District party leaders cutting across political barriers regretted that though the crushing season had started in the State, the Government was yet to announce the cane price. Addressing a press conference here on Friday under the banner of Federation of Farmers Association, they urged the Government to peg the price at Rs. 1,500 per tonne. Special Correspondent

Insurance employees stir on December 13

Eluru: Employees of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the other public sector general insurance companies would join the nation-wide general strike slated for December 13, according to P.V. Nandakumar, general secretary, General Insurance Employees Association. The proposed general strike was intended to express the opposition of the employees against the Government's move for privatisation of public sector insurance companies, he added.

Awareness programme

ELURU: An awareness programme on the usage of Telugu language would be held here on Saturday under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Official Language Commission. The commission Chairperson A.B.K. Prasad, members Rachapalem Chandrasekhar Reddy, Kaluva. Mallaiah would attend. A competition would be held for school and college students in which the participants should speak in a chaste Telugu without the mix ofEnglish words.

Fruits distributed to patients

Kakinada: The district Chemists and Druggists' Association distributed fruits to the inpatients of Government General Hospital here on Friday in connection with the National Pharmacy Week. R.V.S.R.V.
