`Government has lost human face'

Chandy warns of agitation

ALAPPUZHA: The LDF Government has lost its human face six months after it assumed power and has been politicising all issues, Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy has said.

He was inaugurating a protest meeting organised by the Alappuzha district Congress Committee in front of the District Collectorate on Saturday in protest against the alleged failure of the Government in controlling chikungunya outbreak.

Mr. Chandy said the State Government had failed to provide help as promised to the families of those died of chikungunya. While 158 persons died of chikungunya related diseases in the district, the families of only 70 of the deceased were compensated, Mr. Chandy said. The families also did not receive free rations promised by the Government. He said the Government should take immediate steps to provide compensation to the nearest of kin of the deceased.

Had the Government implemented the public health insurance scheme proposed by the former UDF Government, the families of those who died would have received a reasonable compensation, he said. Mr. Chandy also said the LDF Government rejected the insurance scheme merely due to political reasons.

The LDF Government had failed on all fronts in tackling chikungunya, he said. It was the neglect shown by the Government that had resulted in the recurring of disease in many parts of Alappuzha, Mr. Chandy said.

Mr. Chandy said the party would resort to agitations if the Government failed to honour its promise. Alappuzha DCC president C.R. Jayaprakash presided over the function. MLAs K.C. Venugopal, P.C. Vishnunath and M. Murali spoke.

Earlier, Congress activists took out a march from the DCC office to the Collectorate. KPCC secretary Mannar Abdul Latheef and DCC secretary A.A. Shukkoor, among others, led the march.
