Cloud seeding extended

HYDERABAD: The cloud-seeding operations in the State have been extended up to December-end. The decision has been taken in view of the North-East monsoon being effective till the end of December. Rayalaseema will benefit from the extended operations since the North-East monsoon covers mostly this region, an official spokesman said. — Special Correspondent

Delay decried

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation has criticised the Government for "failure" in release of draft voters' lists in several districts including Nalgonda, Warangal, Chittoor, Visakhapatnam by November 22. N. Narayana, general secretary, said in a statement that the lists in several districts were not released by Friday, when the scheduled date was November 22. The delay would cause inconvenience to voters who wanted to their names incorporated. He alleged that there were mistakes in the draft lists and appealed to the State Election Commission to ensure that they were rectified.— Special Correspondent

Award for Sowcar Janaki

HYDERABAD: Vizianagaram-based Guruzada Samskrutika Samakya will present its `Vishista Puraskar" to veteran film and stage actor Sowcar Janaki at Ananda Gajapati Auditorium in the town on November 30.

Other recipients of the award, being given for the last five years, include J.V.Somayajulu, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, C.Narayana Reddy, K.Viswanath and Gummadi Venkateswara Rao. The 75-year-old actor, who made her debut in "Sowcar" at the age of 18, has acted in 385 Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi films and over 300 stage plays.

Girl murdered?

ADILABAD: Nausheen, a 14-year-old girl from Bokkalguda was found dead n Saturday at her home. She is suspected to have been murdered. The girl stayed with her stepfather Saleem who reportedly treated her badly. One Town SI L. Jeevan Reddy was investigating. — Staff Reporter

Fast unto death

NIZAMABAD: Three persons, Chinna Lakshman, Devender and Prithviraj launched fast unto death in front of the area hospital at Yellareddy mandal headquarter, on Saturday, demanding the Government appoint sufficient number of doctors and paramedical staff at the hospital.

They made it clear that they would not give up their fasting until their demands were met. It was preceded by a relay hunger strike for one week under the aegis of the panchayat and local mahila samakhya. — Staff Reporter

Compensation for Somasila oustees

KADAPA: District Legal Services Authority secretary B. Syamsunder said on Saturday that cheques would be given away on November 27 and 28 to persons displaced by Somasila project, whose land acquisition cases were settled in two recent High Court camp Lok Adalats here. Petitioners should appear along with their pattadar passbooks and photocopies, cheque petitions, stamped receipt and full satisfaction memo, according to a statement.

Free asthma camp

KURNOOL: G. Kullayappa, retired Professor of Chest Diseases, conducted a free asthma camp here on Saturday. Senior Civil Judge and Secretary of Legal Services Authority P. Sudhakar inaugurated the camp, held every last Saturday of the month.

Rural sports meet

CHITTOOR: Andhra Pradesh Sports and Physical Education Technical adviser P. Chinnapa Reddy declared open the 37th State junior rural games meet here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion he said that competitions in volleyball, football and weightlifting would be held from November 25 to 28. In all 1,100 athletes from 22 districts were participating in the meet.

ELURU: The police on Saturday claimed to have busted a seven-member dacoit gang responsible for an offence reported at Tadepalligudem in the previous year.

According to Superintendent of Police M. Jaganmohan Reddy, the accused arrested by the police included a person, Duggirala Aruna Kumar of Kukatpalli in Hyderabad, who possessed a master degree in Computer Science. The police recovered the booty worth Rs 3 lakhs from the accused, which included 40 sovereigns of gold jewellery. - Staff Reporter

`Bible rally'

ELURU: A `Bible rally' will be organised in the city on Sunday as part of `Bible Utsav' under the joint auspices of Diocesan Commission for Bible (Eluru) and Subodha Nilayam Communications. The rally will begin at Vangayagudem and culminate in a public function at St. Theressa's Inter College grounds. Rev. CPI to launch stir

Kakinada: The CPI would launch a phased agitational programme in support of its demand for the rights over the gas struck in KG basin and against moving of the gas to other states without meeting the local domestic and industrial requirements, according to T.Madhu, Secretary CPI city unit. Addressing the party city unit meeting here on Saturday, he said huge gas reserves were struck in KG basin. - Correspondent

Dies of snakebite

Kakinada: Thota Kondala Rao (35) a farmer of Durgada village near here who went to the fields in the early hours of Saturday for drawing water to the paddy field from the field channel suffered a snake bite and died on the way to the Government Hospital. - Correspondent
