Honour for Hasnain

HYDERABAD: Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad Seyed E. Hasnain has been elected to the membership of the prestigious Deutsche Akademie Der Naturforscher, Leopoldina (German Academy of Sciences). "I am overwhelmed by this recognition and it is a great honour personally to me and to the university," he said in a press release.

Election expenditure

HYDERABAD: The Income-Tax Department will analyse the election expenditure of candidates in the Karimnagar and Bobbili bypolls once it receives eports from observers, according to D.V. Dharmik, Chief Commissioner, I-T, Hyderabad-I. He, however, refused to elaborate further on reports over spending of huge amounts by the candidates. - Staff Reporter

Two liquor deaths

KURNOOL: Two persons died after consuming liquor at Injedu in Uyyalawada mandal on Thursday. They were identified as Sanjeevarayudu (47) and Narasimhulu (70). Relatives of the victims suspect poisoning for the deaths. - Special Correspondent

Woman's body found

Sangareddy: Tension prevailed in Rajpalli of Medak mandal following the death of a married woman. The partly burnt body of Kavitha, wife of Ramesh, was found in the bathroom. Kavitha's parents complained to the police that their daughter was murdered and burnt for extra dowry. - Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

ANANTAPUR: Distress caused by burden of debt claimed the life of a farmer on Thursday. Chinna Narayana (60) of Aravakuru in Kuderu mandal consumed a pesticide and died in Government General Hospital here. - Staff Reporter

NALGONDA: As a quick follow-up to the Tamil Nadu police inspection of an explosives factory in the district, the Bhongir police arrested two persons of Rajasree Enterprises under the Explosives Act on Thursday. Akkenapally Raj Kumar and Soma Ramakrishna, owner and manager respectively, had been arrested and remanded in custody, Vijay Kumar, SP, said. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Genco on Thursday reviewed security provided to Lower Sileru hydroelectric power project in Visakhapatnam district in the light of blasting of a nearby forest checkpost by Maoists on Wednesday night but ruled out deployment of a full armed contingent. Red sanders seized

Madanapalle: Officials seized on Wednesday red sander logs worth Rs.1.2 lakhs and a car used for its transportation from Rayachoti (Kadapa district). The department officials chased the vehicle and caught it at Balamvaripalle, but the accused abandoned the car and ran away.

The car was carrying 13 pieces of red sander wood weighing 350 kg. The car was sent to Madanapalle forest range office, according to D.F.O., Chittoor Western Division, S. Nageswara Rao. . — Correspondent

TIRUPATI: Tirupati Film Society will celebrate the 84th birth anniversary of playback singer Ghantasala on December 8. Noted music director K.M. 3 killed in accident

VIZIAZNAGARAM: Three persons, including an infant, were killed on the spot and six others injured when the car in which they were travelling was hit by a truck at Pradeepnagar here in the wee hours of Thursday. The dead were identified as S. Malleswara Rao, Girija Kumari and Roop Teja of Rajam in Srikakulam district. The condition of Sudha Rani (28) was stated to be critical and she was admitted to KGH in Visakhapatnam.-

Yendamuri opens Vidya Peetham

Kakinada: Noted writer Yendamuri Veerendranath inaugurated the Saraswati Vidya Peetham founded by him near Madhavapatnam on the city outskirts on Wednesday. He said the peetham was set up at a cost of Rs.85 lakhs, totally funded by him. Free training classes would be conducted for 10 days every month at the peetham, he said. The inaugural session was started with the students of Salipet municipal girls high school. Municipal Commissioner K. Venkateswerlu presided.

City mayor Kavikondala Saroja participated.

Written test for court posts

Rajahmundry: District Principal and Sessions Judge Samudrala Govindarajulu has said that the written test for the posts of junior assistants, typists, field assistants, copyists posts will be held on December 10 at 10.30 am in SKVT college. General knowledge, general English, letter writing, objective type exam will be part of the test and the time duration will be one hour.

Official visits sugar unit

Tuni: Commissioner for Sugar and Cane A. Vidyasagar on Thursday visited Tandava Sugars along with person-in-charge Sandeepkumar Sultania (Joint Collector, Vizag). Speaking on this occasion he said that they were going to give licence to 60 private sugar factories in a phased manner. Tandava Sugars Managing Director TP Sivaramprasad and others participated in the meeting.

`Sthambhadri Sambaralu'

KHAMMAM `Sthambhadri Sambaralu' will be organised in Khammam in January next. Collector Sashibushan Kumar convened a meeting with heads of departments concerned here on Thursday as part of efforts to draw up a plan for the festival.
