CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala inaugurated the Armed Forces Flag Day collection at Raj Bhavan on Thursday with an appeal to the public to make generous donations. Noting that Tamil Nadu was at the forefront in collections, the Governor called on the people to show solidarity and support for the welfare of ex-servicemen, because "they give their today for our tomorrow." The State Government executed various schemes to provide health care, education and employment for ex-servicemen and their families, he said. Earlier, the Chief Minister made his contribution to the Flag Day Fund at his Gopalapuram residence. Chennai Collector R. Jaya said that Rs. 1 crore was collected in Chennai last year. Revenue Secretary S. Audiseshiah, who is the Public Secretary-in-charge, also participated.
