Next Rashtrapati

If the BJP has indeed extended its support to President Abdul Kalam for a second term in office ("Selecting the next Rashtrapati," Dec. 6), so be it. Mr. Kalam has made a mark as President. I am sure there are not many Indians who do not want him to continue.

Sure, he embarrassed the Government at times, but not without being reminded of the powerlessness of the President. The questions he raised while signing bills were relevant. When asked questions governments get an opportunity to put their point across more effectively. Then why complain?

In the present context of political degeneration, a person of Mr. Kalam's stature will do a world of good to the nation. I am sure many want another term for him.

One term is more than adequate for a citizen to hold the highest office of the land. Among the billion and more people of India, there are enough candidates who can be made the President.
