Corrections and Clarifications

The heading of a report was "Pakistani journalists walk out of briefing" (December 12, 2006). The headline is incorrect as the first line of the report was that they walked out of the briefing shaking their heads in disbelief, but it was not meant they walked out, which indicates a protest. They left when it ended. The heading could have been "Spokesperson's remarks stun journalists", and the "walk out" in the sentence could as well have been "left".

A sentence in "Garib Rath may run from all State capitals: Lalu" (December 11, 2006) was: "Mr. [Lalu] Prasad said his target was to increase the railway profit from Rs. 13.5 crore to Rs. 20 crore in the next fiscal." It should have been Rs. 13,500 crore to Rs. 20,000 crore.

A report "ICICI move deplored" (December 10, 2006) said the Communist Party of India was very distressed to see "foreign banks being allowed to take over Indian banks." According to the CPI National Secretary, D. Raja, the ICICI bank, though registered in India, has 73 per cent foreign equity. This was the reason why the party had referred to it as a foreign bank. The ICICI Bank-Sangli Bank is a merger and not a take-over.

A report "Record power output in Nathpa Jhakri project" (December 11, 2006) stated that the country's largest 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Project has generated more than 5130 million units of electricity that has surpassed all previous records. Vijay K. Verma, DGM, Corporate Communications, Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (the public sector unit in charge of the project), clarifies that the "previous records" refer to those set by this project. In the first year of generation (2004-05), it generated 5108 mu; in 2005-06, it was 4055 mu. For the current year till December 11, it has been 5130 mu, and is expected to touch over 6000 mu for the year.

In The Hindu Crossword 8781 ("Variety" page, December 11, 2006), clue "Across 1" was "A fat lad is led — is, oddly, in the best of health (2,3,2,1,6)", and is an anagram. The solution ("Variety" page, December 12, 2006) was "As fit as a fiddle". There are 2 "f"s in the solution and only one in the clue. The clue should have been "A fat lad is fed — ... ."

A report "Pacemen call the shots" ("Sport", December 9, 2006) stated that Wasim Jaffer got a contentious caught behind decision, but the scorecard states that he was out LBW. He was caught behind in the second innings (of India's tour match against the Rest of South Africa). The scoreboard was incorrect.

An AP report on the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka, "New Zealand in control on first day" ("Sport", December 8, 2006), implied that New Zealand's Chris Martin is a tall lefthander. He is a right-arm fast bowler and also bats right-handed.

Was Abhimanyu trapped in the Padmavyuha or Chakravyuha in the Kurukshetra war? "Old, but ever new" (Religion, "Variety" page, December 5, 2006) said Abhimanyu got lost in the Chakravyuha, which was wrong. It was the Padmavyuha (lotus formation).
