Adopt organic farming, farmers told

Belgaum: Speakers at the World Farmers' Day advised farmers against use of excess chemicals and fertilizers in farming and suggested organic farming practices.

MP Suresh C. Angadi, who inaugurated the event organised jointly by the zilla panchayat and the Department of Agriculture here on Saturday, said excessive use of chemicals and fertilizers was adversely affecting the fertility of soil and leaving toxic residues in foodgrains, vegetables and fruits having a direct bearing on the health of its consumers. As farmers look forward to boost farm yields to increase their income by applying chemicals and fertilizers, they should not forget the general good of public health. eferring to farmers committing suicide, he called upon the growers to take best advantage of various farm-based programmes initiated by the Centre and the State Government.
