Rs.46 crore for tourism promotion

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has allotted Rs.46 crore for 2006-07 for tourism promotion activities. It has earmarked Rs. 12 crore for publicity and Rs.23 crore for infrastructure development in tourist spots.

State Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan released a calendar brought out by the tourism department at the Secretariat on Thursday. To commemorate the occasion, the Information and Tourism Department said in a release that Tourism Police force would be created at Mamallapuram, Udhagamandalam, Kodaikanal, Madurai, and Kanyakumari. Police outposts will be set up with five constables and a head constable. During 2006-07, the department would embark on infrastructure development with Central Government assistance in Thanjavur (Rs.427.46 lakh), Kanyakumari (Rs.258.52 lakh) and Madurai (Rs.478.03 lakh).
