Workers' union demands solution to problems

MAKING A POINT: Workers of Satya Sai Water Supply Project staging a dharna in Anantapur on Friday.

ANANTAPUR: Members of Satya Sai Water Supply Project Workers' Union staged a dharna in front of the office of Divisional Engineer here on Friday demanding a solution to the pending problems. They also took out a procession in the town earlier.

They submitted a memorandum to the engineer addressed to the member secretary of the water project. They also complained about the problems from the contractor, Larsen and Toubro, maintaining the project.

Workers' union leaders -- J. Govindu, K. Jagadeeswar Reddy and P. Narasimhulu and district president of CITUB. Lalithamma - said thatsecurity guards in the project were not being paid minimum wages. They were not provided provident fund either. The workers' union also sought the intervention of the officials concerned to ensure payment of overtime allowance to workers and clearance of dues .

The engineer assured the workers' union that a meeting would be convened by Superintending Engineer with L&T management and workers' union to sort out the problems on January 2 and 3, 2007.
