Pay attention to emotional content, choreographers told

Belgaum: It would be wrong if somebody misconstrued that "choreography" had come to India from the West, said Hayavadan Joshi, musicologist and Sanchalak of the city-based Academy of Performing Arts.

Mr. Joshi, who inaugurated a workshop on choreography organised jointly by Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography, Bangalore, and Shantala Natyalaya of Belgaum here on Friday, said the roots of choreography could be found in the Bharatmuni's Natyashastra.

The workshop was organised with the objective of creating awareness on choreography in semi-urban and rural parts of the region.

Mr. Joshi said there were several aspects to the art, which should not be forgotten in the enthusiasm to appear on the stage. While choreographing a dance feature, the teacher and the learner or the performer should ensure that the emotional content in the poetry was reflected. "The choreography should be complimentary to the emotional content inherent in the poetry and not stand in contradiction. The teachers or the choreographers had great responsibility to do justice to the poetry while choreographing a dance feature," he said.

Rekha Hegde, Director of Shantala Natyalaya, was present.
