Prabhu to chair Global Water Partnership

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The former chairman of the Task Force on Interlinking of Rivers and current Member of Parliament, Suresh Prabhu, has been selected to chair the South Asian Global Water Partnership (GWP), in Stockholm, for three years.

The organisation is a network created by stakeholders, including Sweden, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank and the Committee of Economic Development of Australia.

The network has been established to ensure optimum use of scarce water resources in an integrated manner to benefit the world community. Each country has a national water partnership which consists of all stakeholders, including non-governmental organisations, governments, industry, media, utilities, farmers, consumers and professionals.

The GWP initiative is based on promoting and implementing integrated water resources management through the development of a worldwide network that could put together financial, technical, policy and human resources for ensuring sustainable development.
