36 arrested, 91 cases solved

Property worth Rs. 1.75 crore recovered from the accused

Bangalore: The city police rang in the New Year by solving 91 cases and arresting 36 persons. Police Commissioner N. Achutha Rao said that the South, South East and East divisions had detected the most number of cases.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said the police had recovered property worth Rs. 1.75 crore from the accused. He said that 40 two-wheelers and 40 cars were seized. The recovered goods were displayed at the BRV Grounds.

The Police Commissioner announced a reward of Rs. 10,000 each for the teams headed by Deputy Commissioners of Police P. Muniswamy (East), Alok Kumar (South) and Soumendhu Mukherji (South East).

Mr. Muniswamy said the Commercial Street police arrested Kaleem (46) and his son Wasim Khan (19) recently. They were accused in the Inter-State car robbery case. The police recovered 12 cars worth Rs. 53.25 lakh from them. On interrogation, they found that the arrested and three accused — Monu, Vikas, Santosh — used to steal cars and sell them in other cities after changing the number plates and engine and chassis numbers. They used to buy vehicles totalled in accidents along with the RC books from the insurance companies. They used to use the number plates and engine and chassis numbers of these cars and attach it to the stolen cars and sell them at higher rates.

Students held

The Thyagarajanagar police arrested three students, C. Sagar (21), Arun Kumar (18) and Ananth (21), who committed robberies after "being inspired by the English films Oceans Eleven and Oceans Twelve," said Mr. Kumar. He said that the arrested had committed crimes in Thyagarajanagar, Jayanagar, Banashankari, Hanumanthnagar, Basavanagudi, Girinagar and Subramanyapura police station limits.

The police recovered stolen goods worth Rs. 12 lakh, including 13 mangalsutras, four gold necklaces, two gold bangles, four gold bracelets, four pairs of ear rings, eight rings, one kg silver articles and five two-wheelers from the arrested. With their arrest, the police had solved 21 cases.

Mr. Mukherjee said that the South East division police had recovered property worth Rs. 13.25 lakh, including 23 two-wheelers, eight laptops, mobile phones and gold ornaments. On December 28, 2006, the Madiwala police arrested Kishore Kumar (18) of Garvebhavipalya and recovered stolen goods worth Rs. 50,000 from him.

On January 2, they arrested four persons — Venkataramana (20), Murugesh (23), Surya (22) and Veeraiah (24) — and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs. 1 lakh from them. On December 29, 2006, Murugan from Kallanarasappa Grama, Tamil Nadu, was arrested and the police recovered 17 motorcycles worth Rs. 5 lakh from him.

Cases against the accused had been filed in various police stations in and around the city. The Parappana Agrahara police arrested Narayana (27) of Rayasandra and recovered six two-wheelers, one gold chain, two earrings from him. With his arrest, the police had solved nine cases.
