Polio immunisation on Sunday

Thiruvananthapuram: About 30 lakh children under the age of five in the State will be administered polio drops on Sunday, January 7, as part of this year's Pulse Polio immunisation drive. A total of 23,370 booths have been set up across the State for the smooth conduct of the immunisation programme. Booths will also function at public places, railway stations, bus stands and airports. The Pulse Polio drive is being organised with the cooperation of local bodies, city Corporations and anganwadis — Staff Reporter

Minister suspects sabotage

CHENNAI: Public Works Minister Durai Murugan on Thursday said he suspected that the damage caused to parapet of the Mullaperiyar dam was due to sabotage. This would not have happened without the knowledge of Kerala police. Tamil Nadu would bring this matter to the knowledge of the Supreme Court at the next hearing, he added. — Special Correspondent

CPI(M) activist attacked

Thrissur: An activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Prabin, 26, and his mother Devayani, 61, were admitted with injuries to a private hospital at Muthuvattur on Thursday. The police said Mr. Prabin complained that he was allegedly assaulted by a four-member gang outside his house. — Staff Reporter

Environment panel holds interaction

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Environment Appellate Authority held an interaction with State officials and representatives of the industry here on Wednesday on matters relating to environmental clearance for various projects in the State. The Kerala State Pollution Control Board arranged the interaction. Chairman of the authority I.V. Manivannan and members K. Prasad and J.C. Kala answered questions raised at the session.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: T.N. Rajendran, RMO, Punalur Taluk Hospital has been placed under suspension subject to detailed inquiry. This follows a preliminary inquiry that found substance in the complaint that he had accepted bribe for performing an operation to remove a dead child from the womb of a young woman. — Special Correspondent

RSS activist hacked

ALAPPUZHA : S. Subeesh (25), an RSS activist, was seriously injured when a group of assailants attacked him reportedly with swords at a petrol pump at Kappakkada on Thursday. Mr. Subeesh, who was seriously injured in the attack, was admitted to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. His condition is said to be serious. — Staff Reporter

Temple employee held on theft charges

PATHANAMTHITTA: A 39-year-old temple employee, Sureshkumar of Punnackamukal in Thiruvananthapuram, was arrested by the police on Thursday on the charge of stealing gold coin from the Devaswom `Bhandaram' at the Sannidhanam on Wednesday night. The police said that Sureshkumar was caught by the devaswom guards with the gold coin hidden beneath his tongue during a body check while coming out of the Bhandaram on Wednesday night. Sureshkumar was a Kazhakom staff attached to Thrikariyoor Thalamattom Temple near Aluva who was deputed for Sabarimala duty during the pilgrim season. Executive officer Thulaseedharan Thampi issued orders suspending Sureshkumar from service. — Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: This year's Swathi Sangeethotsavam will be held from Saturday to January 12 at the Kuthira Maalika here, member of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore Pooyam Tirunal Gouri Parvathy Bayi has said. She, along with her son, Aswathy Tirunal Rama Varma, was addressing a press conference at the Kowdiar Palace, here, on Thursday. The inaugural concert of the festival will be by Sanjay Subramanyan. Thrissur: Butoh dancer Min Tanaka will perform at the Agasthya Siddhasramam in Vypeen on January 5 and at Natanakairali in Irinjalakuda on January 6 under the auspices of Abhinayakkalari.

Butoh, which originated in post-war Japan, is the collective name for a diverse range of techniques for dance inspired by the Ankoku-Butoh movement,according to a press release. — Staff Reporter
