Opinion - News Analysis

Corrections and Clarifications

* A report "From Bombay to Rajasthan" ("Newscape" page, January 8, 2007) stated that actor Elizabeth Hurley will wear "a 4,000-pound sari by designer Tarun Tahiliani" during her wedding in March. While one reader wondered how she would be able to lift the 1,800 kg sari, another reader said there are possible fears about the bride being reduced to pulp by its weight. It was an error. The word "pound" was used instead of the currency symbol for pound sterling (£).

* In "Britain's arms deal scandals" (Editorial, January 8, 2007), there were queries about the contraction, BAE Systems. It is correct. BAE was formed on November 30, 1999 with the merger of British Aerospace (BAe) and Marconi Electronic Systems (MES), the defence arm of The General Electric Company (GEC).

* The caption of a standalone photograph "Suspension of disbelief" (Chennai city, January 6, 2007, page 4), on a stunt for a social cause, read as if L. Arun, a victim of polio, was being penalised, by being wrapped in a straitjacket and suspended from a height of 40 feet from a crane. L. Arun freed himself from the fetters in one minute and a few seconds, bettering the previous record, in an attempt to promote awareness of HIV/AIDS among youth. The caption was incomplete.

* A sentence in "Centre blames it on Supreme Court orders" (January 6, 2007) was: "... and during this period none of the Attorney Generals, Solicitor Generals or the Additional Solicitor Generals, who had appeared in these cases had never pointed out that `we are passing orders contrary to the statutes.'" The usage of the double negatives "none" and "never" distorts the views expressed by the judges. It should have been "none" and "ever".

* In a report "Saddam supporters hold demonstrations" (January 2, 2007, page 1), a sentence was: "The site of the protests was not far from Awja, where Mr. [Saddam] Hussein's body was interned in the early hours on Sunday. It should have been "interred".

* Errors in the solution to The Hindu Crossword No. 2684 (The Hindu-Magazine, January 7, 2007, page 6). "Allirator" should have been "Alligator" (clue 15 Down — "Reptile flying at gorilla - 9"); "Allergy" should have been "Allegro" (clue 23 Across — "Scored at a brisk speed, a fifty by member run out - 7"), and "Tyrrid" should have been "Torrid" (clue 20 Down — "End of August `orrible? Scorching - 6").

* The scorecard of "A near-perfect day for Karnataka" ("Sport", January 4, 2007), stated that in the Ranji Trophy Super League Group `A' cricket match at Bangalore, Yomahesh had taken 1 for 85. It was an error. He finished with two wickets.
