BANGALORE: The State Cabinet on Saturday decided to implement a Rs. 194.54-crore project to modernise the drinking water supply system in Mysore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The project, which will be completed in about 30 months, would help Mysore get water supply 24 hours a day by June 2009.

Addressing presspersons after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said the project would aim at replacing the water supply network, which was established 50 years ago. This would help reduce the leakages.

Despite having enough water storage, it was possible to supply water to only 75 per cent of the residents in Mysore due to inefficient supply network, the Chief Minister pointed out.

Of the total project cost, the Centre will provide Rs. 155.64 crore while the State Government and the Mysore City Corporation will chip in Rs. 19.45 crore each.

Meters will be installed for the water supply connections at all the new layouts while those in the old layouts will be replaced.
