On charges of waylaying and robbing motorists and pedestrians

Chennai : Police have busted two gangs and arrested 10 men on charges of waylaying and robbing motorists and pedestrians in the city.

Police said one of the gangs targeted car drivers, two-wheeler riders and pedestrians walking alone. They would stop motorists by picking a fight and threaten them to part with their valuables. The gang operated in Teynampet, Mambalam, Pondy Bazaar, Nungambakkam and Egmore. The names of the arrested were given as Govindarajan, Sudhakaran, Jamaal, Dhameem and Karthik. Five gold chains, 10 rings, a watch, nine cellphones and Rs. 11,100 were found in their possession.

The gang was also involved in stealing a Maruti 800 car. Police found the car with the gang's accomplices Senthil Kumar and Dhinakar. They also recovered other stolen cars and two wheelers, besides computer parts and electronic goods, all valued at about Rs. 10 lakh.

Another gang, comprising three men from Thiruvottiyur, was arrested for robberies in Kilpauk, T.P. Chathiram and Anna Nagar. Daniel, Shekar and Sudhir were found to have jewellery and valuables worth Rs. 5 lakh in their possession. Police said they kept watch on people leaving banks after drawing cash, followed them on bikes, and stopped the drivers saying their cars were leaking oil and steal the money while they were distracted. They have been indicted in 10 cases.
