Government criticised for making `tall claims'

  • `Assurances only to cover up differences between partners'
  • Rs. 20,000 crore required for fulfilling promises

BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government is holding out false assurances only to cover up the differences between the two coalition partners, the former president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee and Rajya Sabha member B. Janardana Poojary has said.

He told presspersons here on Saturday that the Government was making "tall claims" about its achievement in the past one year.

But going by the political and administrative realities, it was yet to fulfil the basic promises such as waiving loans taken by farmers and extending loans to farmers at four per cent interest, Mr. Poojary said.

The Government would need a minimum of Rs. 20,000 crore for the effective implementation of all the assurances it has held out. The Government lacked conviction and concern in projecting its programmes considering the volume of the State budget.

Allowing Virat Hindu Samajotsavas and creating tense situation across the State was the only achievement of the Government in the last one year, Mr. Poojary said.

    Prohibition

On the issue of prohibition, Mr. Poojary asserted that the Government could not afford losing its estimated revenue of Rs. 3,000 crore.

Any attempt at implementing prohibition would lead corruption and human tragedies, he added.

    Violence

On the alleged involvement some of his party members in the violence in some part of Bangalore during a meeting in January organised by a private forum to protest against the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Mr. Poojary said had he been the president of the KPCC, he would have expelled any member of the party found responsible for the violence.
