Jay Bhagwan corners glory

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Jay Bhagwan lit up the proceedings on the second day of the Kerala University inter-collegiate athletic meet by breaking a long-standing record in men's javelin at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium on Wednesday.

The first year B com student of Mar Ivanios College who hails from Haryana threw the spear to 64.7m to break Shaul Hameed's record (61.62m) set way back in 1977. Apart from Jay Bhagwan's records, the performances of other athletes were pedestrian. Alkachikli won the women's triple gold to complete a double.

Fathima Matha National College overtook overnight leader SNC, Chempazanthy to lead the points tally with 40 points in men's section while SN College for Women, Kollam continued its lead with 38 points at the end of the competitions on the second day.

Football workshop

A workshop on the science of football will be organised by the LNCPE on February 9 and 10 at the LNCPE college auditorium, Kariavattom.

Various themes like physiological demand of football, training, sports psychology, sports nutrition, identification of sports talent, drugs and dope control, artificial turf for football and development of flexibility and coordinative abilities will be discussed by experts and coaches.

K.M.I. Mather, the president of the Kerala Football Association, will be the chief guest. The meeting will be presided over by P.P. Mathai, former SAI executive director, and K.P. Sunny, the KFA secretary, will be the guest of honour.
