CHENNAI: The fortnight-long annual tourism festival of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, held at Port Blair recently, drove home, once again, the message that tourism played a vital role in the economic development of the region. This year's festival drew many tourists from the mainland. Bollywood playback singers enthralled the huge gatherings at musical nites. An exhibition showcased the development of the islands with a focus on tourism potential. In his inaugural address, Lt. Governor Bhopinder Singh called for integrating tourism development with socio-economic progress. "The spirit of unity among the islanders, and the manner in which they live in perfect harmony amid diversity, is certainly an example worthy of emulation for the whole country." The lone MP from the islands, Manoranjan Bhakta, said the festival sent out a message that the islanders were united in facing any challenge. Chief Secretary Shumsher K. Sheriff said proposals had been drafted for expanding tourism and upgrading the industry to international standards. But, while promoting tourism, the fragile eco-system of the islands had to be kept in mind. According to the Lt. Governor, the islands were fast becoming a serene eco-tourism destination. As they had 86 per cent of forest cover, it was imperative that the administration promoted sustainable eco-tourism without disturbing the sensitive and rich ecology. "The vast array of green forests can be promoted for wilderness tourism and trekking. The islands are also home to a number of endemic birds and animals, which nature lovers can see only here." Welcoming big hotel chains to set up shop, he said: "We would expect them to employ local youth for shop floor and lower management jobs. The buildings will have to be oriented in such a manner as to take advantage of the prevailing winds and outward views as well as thorough ventilation. They must harmonise with the tropical environment." The administration was focussing on adventure and health tourism, monsoon destination and MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions). It was also encouraging water sports, scuba diving, snorkelling, trekking and game fishing.
