C. Raj Kumar in his article "Nithari and the system of governance" (Feb. 9) has highlighted the lapses and the corruption in the police force. But who makes the force corrupt society? Then why blame the police alone? The MLA and MP of the constituency under which Nithari falls should also be held responsible for the lapses and booked for negligence of duty. Creating an independent commission is not the answer because there are enough mechanisms in the law to check wrong doings.
Col. Shivraj Kumar,
* * * The macabre Nithari killings have exposed the rot in the system of governance. Corruption, both of the monetary and moral kind, has become pervasive in all government agencies. It is time the government revamps the whole law enforcement machinery and makes merit the sole criterion for entering and continuing in service. Accountability has to be ensured at all levels of government and impartial agencies such as the NHRC given more powers.
Abhishek Mishra,
* * * The crimes committed at Nithari are an eye-opener to the laxity of the police force. The idea of an independent commission is a welcome measure but it must be equipped to fight corruption.
