Corrections and Clarifications

* A sentence in "Sanjay Dutt gets time to surrender till further orders" (February 9, 2007) was: "The designated Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (prevention) Act (TADA) court here on Thursday extended the time granted to actor Sunil Mr. Dutt to surrender till further orders in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case." It should have been Mr. Sanjay Dutt.

* The expansion of UPA is the United Progressive Alliance, and not United Progress Alliance as stated in a report "All-party meet on Cauvery today; [Karnataka] bandh put off" (February 7, 2007).

* In a report "Dharmapuri bus burning case verdict on February 15" (February 6, 2007), it was stated in the strapline and the text that the incident took place six years ago. It should have been seven years ago.

* Confusion over two codes and two sections. In "Corrections and Clarifications" (February 6, 2007) we had referred to a column ("Past & Present") in The Hindu-Magazine (issue dated February 4, 2007, page 3) and said that Section 144 and Section 420 mentioned in it are a part of the Indian Penal Code. It was an error. While Section 420 does belong to the Indian Penal Code, Section 144, which was referred to in the column as "known to most Indians", is a part of the "Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973". This is the "well-known prohibitory order" section. Under this section, a magistrate empowered by the State Government can issue necessary directions to prevent a disturbance of public tranquillity or a riot. Such an order may be directed at an individual, or persons in an area, or to the public generally when frequenting or visiting a place. (Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code refers to punishment for "joining unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapon".)
