Corrections and Clarifications

In an article "Beyond punishment" (The Hindu-Magazine, February 11, 2007, page 4), the sentences were: "The Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children — endorsed by UNICEF, UNESCO and many other organisations and individuals — was launched in Geneva in April 2001. It aims to ensure that the recommendations of the Committee on the Rights of the Child and other human rights bodies are accepted." It should have been "... It aims to ensure that the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other human rights bodies are accepted." (The Government of India has ratified the recommendations.)

In a report "`Parambikulam accord flouted by Tamil Nadu'" (February 3, 2007), it was stated in the second paragraph that as in the Parambikulam Aliyar agreement, Tamil Nadu was to maintain a water level of 2,663 feet at Kerala Sholayar on February 1 each year. The last paragraph stated that a minimum level of not less than 2,658 feet was to be maintained between September 1 and February 1, leading to confusion. As in the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) agreement between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Kerala Sholayar reservoir should be brought to the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 2663 feet every September 1 and February 1 by Tamil Nadu.

A report "High Court directive on delimitation of Municipal Corporation wards" (February 7, 2007) quoted a PIL that said the Constitution provides that elections to local bodies across the country must be held before the end of the four-year tenure. It was an error. According to the Constitution, it is a five-year term.

The last sentence in "Tight security in place" ("Sport", February 8, 2007), a report on the 33rd National Games at Guwahati, was: "As the Games, billed as the biggest held so far, open here on Friday, those who are here as part of the Games will have to put up with some of the sternest security drills for the safety of all till the curtains are wrung down on February 18." Of course it has been raining heavily in Guwahati the past few days, still, was a reader's comment. The phrase is to "ring down (or up) the curtain" which means to mark the end (or beginning) of an enterprise or event.

The heading, text and caption of the accompanying photograph of a report called the birthing season of the Nilgiri tahr as "calving season" and the young ones as "calves" ("It's calving season [for the Nilgiri tahr] at Eravikulam Park", "Newscape" page, February 12, 2007). The Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai, clarifies that the cycle is known as "kidding" and the young ones as "kids". Dr. Ranjit Daniels, wildlife ecologist, adds that the more specific term is the "kid dropping season". The tahr is a unique species of mountain goat; it has all the qualities of a primitive goat.
