Contract workers take out rally

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: The contract workers of Anantapur Municipal Corporation staged a half-naked protest in support of their long-pending demands as part of the three-day relay fast here on Wednesday.

The workers under the aegis of Municipal Udyoga Karmika Sangham took out the procession from municipal office to tower clock and back. Speaking at the protest, town president of CITU Krishnamurthy said the Government was cold to their demands even though Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had responded positively during his visit to the town on January 19.

He demanded the Government to scrap the contract system and employ the workers directly, pay their wages through treasury in the first week of every month, allot house sites to the workers and others. District president of the sangham E. Nazirullah Khan, town president B. Prasad, secretary M. Laxminarayana and others also spoke.
