Runaway students reach home

Back in Haryana after fleeing from their school in Assam

GUWAHATI: Seven students of Class IX of Jawahar Navodoya Vidyalaya in upper Assam's Tinsukia district ran away from the school and reached their homes in Haryana on Thursday after the school authorities allegedly declined to grant them leave.

The school authorities informed the Tinsukia police when the students were not present in the post-lunch roll call on Sunday, said Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner A.K. Absar Hazarika. Searches were conducted and the boys' parents were also immediately informed. However, on Thursday the Haryana police informed the Assam police that all the students had reached their homes, the DC said. Mr. Hazarika said that the students had sought leave to go home, which was declined by the school authorities on the ground that they had examinations to sit for in March and had only returned from Diwali vacation in November.

The students had come from Haryana to study in the school under exchange programme of Navodaya Vidyalayas where students of class IX go from one school to another Navodaya school.
