M.L. Sondhi prize for Ashley Tellis

Prof. Tellis played a key role in structuring and implementing India-U.S. nuclear deal

NEW DELHI: Dr. Ashley Tellis, strategic expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Washington, has been awarded the first M.L. Sondhi prize.

Prof. Tellis, in his capacity as a senior adviser to the Bush administration, moved against the prevailing intellectual current in making his case for bolder U.S.-India ties, and played a significant role in the idea, structuring and implementing of the July 2005 nuclear deal.

Some of his major works include India's Emerging Nuclear Posture, Interpreting China's Grand Strategy, Limited Conflicts Under the Nuclear Umbrella, and India as a Great Power: An Action Agenda for the United States.

Prof. Tellis will be presented the award comprising Rs. 1 lakh in cash, a plaque and an invitation to lecture in Delhi at a ceremony in April.

The award was announced in 2006 by the M.L. Sondhi Institute for Asia-Pacific Affairs and Prof. M.L. Sondhi Memorial Trust.
