CHENNAI: Thursday's Language (I) paper gave a positive start to the State Board Higher Secondary Class XII students with a majority of them finding the examination easy. A total of 5,62,710 students from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry appeared for the examination, which will go on till March 21, at over 1,000 centres. Tight security measures were in place at all the centres. Members of flying squads visited centres to ensure smooth conduct of the examinations. In Chennai, about 44,000 students took the examination at 135 centres. No major case of malpractice was reported except one at Villupuram where a student reportedly carried notes. Director of Government Examinations Vasanthi Jeevanandam said: "We are yet to receive information about this candidate. The Chief Education Officer concerned will get back to us soon." This is the second batch of students appearing for the examinations after the syllabus was "enriched." This year, certain difficult portions were deleted as last year's results had been deemed unsatisfactory by many. Students will appear for the Language (paper II) examination on Friday.
