World Forest Day

CHENNAI: Visitors will be given free entry on World Forest Day, which falls on March 21, to Guindy National Park and Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur.

River conservation

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has allocated an additional Rs. 11 crore for the ongoing Chennai City River Conservation Project (CCRCP). So far, the Ministry has sanctioned Rs. 371.65 crore (including the latest grant) for the CCRCP project, which Metrowater started implementing six years ago. The project seeks to enhance the capacity of existing sewage treatment plants and checking discharge of sewage into the city's waterways.

Five detained under Goondas Act

Five men were detained under the Goondas Act and stolen goods valued at Rs 1 lakh, including gold chains and mobile phones were recovered from them, on Thursday. Commissioner of Police Letika Saran had directed Triplicane police to form special teams after complaints about house-breaking and waylaying.

Acting under the direction of the Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore and Deputy Commissioner M Ramasubramani, a police team arrested five men, who were identified as Munusami (24), K Arumugam (22), Nana alias Iqbal (20), Velu (29) and Palayam (25). The police recovered the stolen goods, which included gold, cash and mobile phones.

The Commissioner ordered their detention under the Goondas Act.
