MLA enlivens House proceedings

HYDERABAD: Terming Finance Minister K. Rosaiah as `Assembly tiger' and likening the duo of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Mr. Rosaiah to "Chanakya-Chandragupta" and "Krishna-Arjuna," Congress MLA D. Sambaiah enlivened the debate on welfare in the House on Wednesday. The observation of Mr. Sambaiah that Mr. Rosaiah was a `Assembly tiger' had the Chief Minister in splits. - Special Correspondent

Four girls drowned in canal

ANANTAPUR: Four girls who got into the Tungabhadra High Level Canal for bathing drowned on the outskirts of Anantapur town on Wednesday. According to reports, the girls who hailed from Giriprasad Nagar in the town went to the canal around noon. When one of them drowned accidentally, the others tried to save her but in the process all the four drowned. The deceased were identified as Nagalakshmi, (10), N. Pullayamma, (19), N. Lakshmi, (12), and P. Bhavani, (14). - Special Correspondent

WB representative to tour State

HYDERABAD: Paul Riyan, a World Bank representative, will undertake an eight-day visit to the State from March 9 to study various programmes under comprehensive forest development, removal of rural poverty and joint forest management being run with the bank's assistance. - Special Correspondent

116 Intermediate students booked

HYDERABAD: As many as 116 students were booked for malpractice in the first year Intermediate English I paper examination conducted in the State on Wednesday. A total number of 8,53,870 students appeared for the exam. -Special Correspondent

Boy dies in fire accident

ANANTAPUR: In a major fire accident, a 14-year-old boy died and 20 shops were destroyed at Mudigubba town in Anantapur district on Wednesday. According to reports, the fire emanated from a shop due to short-circuit. A boy, identified as Renu Kumar,suffered burns when LPG cylinders exploded. - Special Correspondent

YSR to launch `Aarogyasri'

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy will launch the State Government's health insurance scheme for the poor, `Aarogyasri' at Mahabubnagar on March 31, according to a press release. The scheme would encompass 80 lakh people (23 lakh families) having white ration cards in Srikakulam, Anantapur and Mahabubnagar districts in the first phase. - Special Correspondent

Degree student dead

KURNOOL: A degree student who attempted suicide by consuming poison five days ago died in the hospital here on Wednesday. Jayanti, a student of Vasavi College, was depressed after her parents asked her to stop education to due financial constraints. — Special Correspondent

Dies of snakebite

KADAPA: A woman, Ammanamma, 50, died of snakebite in Yanadipalle in Railway Kodur mandal on Wednesday. She was watering plants, when the snake bit her. — Staff Reporter

Driver found dead

KADAPA: Pothuluri Balavenkataiah, 33, a lorry driver of Kesalingayapalle in Mydukur mandal was found dead after consuming pesticide laced liquor, according to Mydukur police. Balavenkataiah had gone to Mydukur on March 5 on being called by lorry owner Ranga Rao, according to police. — Staff Reporter

Women's panel bids to rescue girl

KURNOOL: Leaders of Mahila Sangham stormed a house at Brindavam Colony here following a complaint that a girl was detained by her parents on Wednesday. The girl reportedly married a youth against her parents wish following which the latter detained her and tried to get her married to another person. The girl reportedly attempted suicide and was hospitalised. The Sangham leaderswent to the girl's house but could not locate her. - Special Correspondent
