CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has mooted intra-State availability based tariff (ABT) system. [The rationale behind the system is to ensure grid discipline and optimal utilisation of resources. It envisages formulating plans of power production and supply to different customers. Implementation of such plans is done through incentives and disincentives.] At a meeting of the Commission's State Advisory Committee on Wednesday, TNERC secretary R. Balasubramanian made a presentation on the feasibility and preparedness for implementation of the proposed system in the State. Suggestions were made by members of the committee that the Board could improve its working within the present framework through measures including the adoption of the concept of profit centres. TNERC chairperson S. Kabilan said consultations would continue. On the application of a New Delhi-based private company for intra-State electricity trading license, the members raised questions regarding the availability of surplus power for trading within the State. The company was advised to come back to the panel with more details.
