TIRUPATI: K. Umamaheswari, a first year student of M.Sc Applied Mathematics at Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV), committed suicide by hanging in her hostel room on Monday. Fellow students alerted the warden on finding Room No.214 of Gowthami hostel bolted from inside. When the security persons broke the window panes open, they found the girl hanging from the fan. On the advice of the varsity's medical officer Dr. Padmavathi, Umamaheswari was rushed to SVRR Government General Hospital, where the doctors declared her dead. At a hurriedly-convened meeting, the varsity authorities decided to ban the use of cellphones for a few days and make sure the girls were not left in their hostel rooms during class hours. Those with reasons of sickness and other inconvenience will be allowed to rest in the sick room at health centre.
