KSRTC may trade in carbon

Bangalore: Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) may soon begin carbon trading. Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a function organised to inaugurate an energy park here on Wednesday, A.P. Joshi, KSRTC Managing Director, said that both bio-diesel experiments — Honge oil and diesel mixed with ethanol — qualify under the "Clean Development Mechanism" of the Kyoto Protocol. "One litre of diesel emits 2.63 kg of carbon dioxide. If we take the two projects up, we may be able to sell 44,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year," he said.

The agreement with the World Bank was in the final stages. The two pro-jects may be classified under certified emission reductions within eight months. Ananda Rao P.S., Head (Environment), KSRTC, said that with one certified emission reduction, one tonne of carbon dioxide may be traded. Developing count-ries that trade in carbon pay $ 8 to $ 10 per tonne.
