Woman, daughter drown in a well

Another daughter survives; dowry harassment suspected

BANGALORE: A woman allegedly harassed by her husband for more dowry jumped into a well along with her two daughters in Magadi police station limits in Bangalore Rural district on Tuesday night.

While Manjula (27) and 18-month-old Disha died, the other daughter, Madhu, was rescued by the public.

Manjula of Bestarapalya had married Shivaraj of Maddur eight years ago. The couple and their children were living with her mother Siddalingamma at Bestarapalya. On a complaint by Siddalingamma, the Magadi police have registered a case.

In another incident, a newlywed woman set herself on fire at her house in Uttarahalli Tuesday night.

The police gave her name as Renuka (20). She had married Nagendra, a granite polisher, two months ago. She ended her life as Nagendra was allegedly torturing her for dowry. The Subramanyapura police have registered a case and are on the lookout for Nagendra.

Murdered

An autorickshaw driver was stabbed to death in Yeshwanthapur police station limits on Tuesday night.

The police gave his name as Alan Fred (25) of B.K. Nagar. Around 10 p.m., Wilson Raj noticed his son Fred quarrelling with some of his friends in front of his house. Around midnight, Raj found Fred's body lying in a pool of blood on the road, the police said. The police suspect Anji, Raghu and two others, with whom Fred was last seen, could have committed the murder. The Yeshwanthapur police have registered a case.

Robbed

Two armed men barged into a mobile phone shop on BTM Layout Ring Road and robbed the proprietor Amar of two mobile phones estimated at Rs. 25,000 on Tuesday night. The two threatened Amar with a knife, the MICO Layout police who have registered a case, said.

Chain snatched

Two men, who were riding a motorcycle, snatched a gold chain estimated at Rs. 20,000 from Hemalatha in Subramanyanagar police station limits on Tuesday. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in 2nd Stage, E Block, Rajajinagar, when Hemalatha was on her way to a temple, the police said.

Three killed

Two persons were killed and two were injured in a collision between a lorry and a goods vehicle in Bangalore Rural district in the early hours of Wednesday.

The accident occurred around 1.30 a.m. near Talakere check post on Bangalore-Kunigal Road in Kudhur police station limits. The names of the dead were identified as Munlingashetty (36) of Kamakshipalya and Shiva Kumar (30) of Nagamangala in Mandya district, the driver and cleaner of the goods vehicle, the police said. The driver and cleaner of the lorry were injured. Sheik Ahmed (50) of Byrasandra was killed on the spot after a lorry hit his motorcycle on Kengal Hanumanthaiya Road around 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wilson Garden traffic police have seized the lorry and arrested the driver Gangadhar.

Recovered

The HAL police have arrested Kumar (31) of B. Narayanapura on charges of burglary and recovered from him gold ornaments estimated at Rs. 10 lakh. Kumar had burgled 10 houses in Mahadevapura, HAL, Kaggadasapura, Marathahalli, Vignananagar and surrounding areas. He was an accused in burglary cases in Chennai, the police said.
