Corrections and Clarifications

  • The expansion of RLD is the Rashtriya Lok Dal, and not the Rashtriya Janata Dal, as was published in "`Fourth front' to contest 193 seats" (March 16, 2007). In the same report, a query arose on the figure quoted in the heading (193 seats) and the break up of seats given in the text (182 seats). Some seats would be allotted to potentially strong candidates. Mr. V.P. Singh, leader of the "Fourth Front", intends filling the gap with them.

  • In "Population report" ("Briefly", March 15, 2007, page 1) and "Huge changes in population pattern likely", a longer version of the same AP report, ("Newscape" page, March 15, 2007), it was stated that the world's population is likely to reach 9.2 billion in 2050, with nearly three times as many people over the age of 60, according to the U.N. Population Division. What was meant was that the projected number for 2050 would comprise "nearly three times as many people over the age of 60" as compared to current figures.

  • A PTI report "A rising tide of the wealthy" ("Newscape" page, March 10, 2007) stated that Kushal Pal Singh of DLF was ranked 62 with $10 billion while Bharti Group chairman Sunil Mittal and family were ranked at 49 with $9.5 billion. Sunil Mittal and family are actually ranked 69, not 49, according to the Forbes list of the world's billionaires. The PTI report was incorrect.

  • In The Hindu Crossword 8862 (March 16, 2007), clue 8 Down was "Relatively speaking, they are unpleasant in pantomine (4,7)". It should have been "pantomime".
