USEFUL TIPS: Commandant Vinod Chamoli, Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard ship Habbah Khatun, issuing instructions to police personnel, during onboard training off the Rameswaram coast, on Friday.
On board Habbah Khatun (Coast Guard Ship): Efforts to strengthen coordination among security agencies, particularly between the Coast Guard and the State police, in combating challenges along the Tamil Nadu coast, has received a big boost with the conclusion of a five-day onboard training programme. The exercise, conducted by the Coast Guard for the police, assumed significance in the background of recent seizures of explosive material meant for Sri Lanka and the arrest of several persons in this connection. The exercise is expected to aid the State police in providing men and material for the 12 marine police stations announced by the State Government. The programme, which began on March 19, ended on Friday off the Rameswaram coast. "They were trained in search, rescue, anti-poaching and anti-smuggling operations along the coast. It will not only help the police to equip the marine police stations but also to improve the overall efficiency of the police manning the coast," said Commandant Vinod Chamoli, Commanding Officer of the Habbah Khatun, the Coast Guard's state of the art patrolling ship. Commandant Chamoli and Commandant Ravi said the ship was stationed along the International Maritime Boundary Line off Rameswaram coast for considerable time. S.S. Krishnamoorthy, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ramanathapuram Range, said the training would help the police design duties for the marine police stations set up to control illegal activities along the coast.
