NEW DELHI: The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, on Friday said lawyers specialising in tax matters should also be prepared to sit as judges on various tribunals created to settle tax disputes.

Speaking at the inaugural session of "Swarn Jayanti Mahotsav" of the Sales Tax Bar Association here, the Chief Justice expressed confidence that such lawyers would make good judges. It was imperative that such tribunals settled disputes quickly as that would promote public confidence in these mechanisms, he added.

The Chief Justice also felicitated Justice D. K. Jain of the Supreme Court, Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain, and Delhi High Court Judges J. M. Malik and Kailash Gambhir on the occasion.

Among others who addressed the gathering were Delhi High Court Chief Justice M. K. Sharma and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Apart from the two-day "Mathosav", the Sales Tax Bar association golden jubilee celebrations would be marked by meetings and seminars.
