Postal strike

The Postal Department has taken a severe beating from private courier services ever since they entered on the scene. Still, we hear that the Postal Department employees plan to go on a strike. Public sympathy is just not with them, and they have to blame themselves for it. The associations who convene meetings to support the `cause' should first think of improving the efficiency of services. Otherwise they will continue to be losers.

Report and desired effect

Reporters' pen is a powerful weapon. It has been proved in the case of Thangamarimuthu, a conductor with the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, and an accident victim who received his compensation and salary dues a couple of days back — after the news about his plight was published in your newspaper.

Hundreds of judgements come out from High Courts of all States every week, but very few of them are in favour of the weaker sections of the society.

Even after categorical pronouncement of some orders, the bureaucrats see to that the decision-making is delayed. They are not afraid of contempt of court proceedings.

Even if the judgement is published as a new item in a daily, the officials do not bother and they simply reply that the order is yet to come. But at the same time, if the news item appears with comments and criticism, the official machinery strives to solve the problem at once.

Thanks to the continuous efforts of your reporter in supporting the poor conductor. When will the official machinery change its attitude?

Toilets needed

Even though Madurai attracts scores of tourists every day, there is no facility for attending to nature's call at prime places. The existing toilets are poorly maintained, and the near absence of toilets at many places forces the public to suffer in silence. The floating population of the city is exceptionally high and the local administration is duty-bound to provide needed amenities to the visitors.

Apart from construction of modern toilets, the maintenance of it should be handed over to voluntary organisations for proper upkeep which is equality important.
