Karunanidhi opposes joint patrolling

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has informed the Prime Minister he was against any suggestion for joint patrolling by the Naval forces of India and Sri Lanka to prevent attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen.

According to a press release, he said: "In fact, it will complicate the situation further. The only way the issue can be resolved is to impress upon the Sri Lankan Government to instruct their Navy to desist from firing on innocent fishermen of Tamil Nadu." Mr. Karunanidhi said such incidents would recur if sea surveillance were not adequately tightened.
