Relay fast by CPI(M) party cadre

KADAPA: CPI(M) members launched a 24-hour relay hunger strike in front of the Collectorate on Wednesday, in support of the 43-day-old relay fast by partymen for house sites in Brahmamgari Matham.

The partymen are on relay fast before B. Matham tahsildar's office since February 26 demanding allotment of house sites to the poor and taking over of lands encroached upon by non-locals, CPI(M) district secretary B. Narayana said. Local leaders took up indefinite hunger strike on April 9, decrying indifference of officials. — Staff Reporter

Plea for debate on child rights in Council

TIRUPATI: Rayala Babu Rajendra Prasad, a social activist from Piler town, has appealed to the newly-formed Legislative Council to initiate discussion on child labour and ways for restoration of their rights.

In a representation submitted to B. Chengalrayalu, an MLC from Kodur in Kadapa district, Mr. Prasad expressed concern over the growing incidence of physical abuse of child labourers and street children, citing surveys of the UNICEF and Child Welfare Department.

MP opens shopping complex for SCs

KADAPA: Kadapa MP Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy on Wednesday inaugurated Pragathi shopping complex built by District SCs Service Cooperative Society in Vempalle, at a cost of Rs. 11.75 lakhs. Mr. Vivekananda Reddy and Zilla Parishad chairperson D. Jyothi Reddy called upon SCs to avail Government schemes. More such shopping complexes would be built in the district, executive director of DSCSCS B. Anil Kumar Reddy said. Zilla Parishad CEO P. Maoists kill sarpanch

VISAKHAPATNAM: Maoists shot dead Korra Rama Rao (30), sarpanch of Balapam in Chintapalli mandal, late on Tuesday night accusing him of helping the police in recruiting Girijan youths for a police battalion. When villagers tried stop them, Maoists scared them away by firing into the air. Later, they took Rama Rao to a distance and shot him twice in the head and left the scene. - Special Correspondent

Two killed in accident

Sangareddy: Two persons were killed in an accident involving two trucks on Rajiv Rahadari during the wee hours of Wednesday near Kukunoorpalli of Kondapaka mandal. According to police the accident occurred when a truck carrying sand hit a stationary truck carrying fly ash. Vasu (28) cleaner of the vehicle, who was inspecting the punctured tyre of the truck, died on the spot. Aziz (25) cleaner of the other vehicle, who was sitting on the left side of the truck, also died on the way to the hospital. Both belong to Karimnagar. The condition of one driver Venkateswara Rao a native of Guntur who lost his left hand in the accident was said to be critical.- Staff Reporter

Providential escape

Sangareddy: In another incident on Wednesday near Rimmanaguda, also on Rajiv Rahadari, eight persons of a family escaped unhurt when a speeding truck rammed into their compound during the early hours. Driver of a coal-transport truck going towards Hyderabad dozed off and lost control over the vehicle. The truck hit a transformer and then the compound wall of the house of one Narsimhulu before coming to halt a few feet away from eight persons who were sleeping outside the house. The transformer also landed only few inches away from those sleeping outside. Driver of the truck Shankar a resident of Karimnagar was taken into custody. - Staff Reporter

Award presented

KAZIPET: Station Manager Ch. L. Narasimham was selected for the prestigious `General Manager's Award' in recognition of his outstanding services to the organisation.

According to a press release, the GM Award is the highest award given in a railway zone and in the SCR zone, it went to Ch L Narasimham for the year 2007. Mr Narasimham joined the railways in 1970 as assistant station manager.- Staff Reporter
