Commission issues clarification

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: According to Justice S.R. Venkatesha Murthy, the 43-page report of the "tentative findings" drafted by the Commission of Inquiry headed by him on allegations of corruption against Syeda Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Women's University, Bijapur, were submitted to Ms. Akhtar by the commission on January 1, 2007, and not on February 28, as reported in The Hindu (April 13, 2007).

It was the final report of the commission that was submitted to Karnataka Governor T.N. Chaturvedi (who is the Chancellor of the university) on February 28, he clarified.

The commission asked Ms. Akhtar to respond to the "tentative findings" by January 17, and she gave her response on January 21, he said.

Further, her contention that her replies had not been considered was not correct as all her statements were examined and incorporated in the final report, he said.
