ALAPPUZHA: A Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist was hacked to death by unidentified persons at Charummoodu in Vettiyar, near Mavelikara, on Friday night. The body of G. Chandran with multiple injuries was found in a roadside pit near Padippura Junction on Saturday morning. Tension prevailed in Mavelikara and its surrounding areas on Saturday with the RSS and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that cadres of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were behind the murder. The police have been deployed in strength in sensitive areas. District Superintendent of Police E.J. Jayaraj and other senior police officials visited Vettiyar. The BJP called for a daylong hartal in the district. The murder is seen as retaliation to an attack on a CPI(M) activist Sanal, allegedly by RSS cadres on Friday evening. Sanal is undergoing treatment at Mavelikara Government Hospital.
Suspension
Kuruthikad Sub-Inspector is learnt to have been placed under suspension following the incident. Mr. Jayaraj said Chengannur Deputy Superintendent of Police B. Ravindra Prasad had been assigned to investigate the case. Earlier in the day, RSS activists gheraoed the vehicles of Mr. Jayaraj and Alappuzha RDO Velayudhan while they were on their way to Vettiyar.
