New junior programme

Chennai: As part of the effort to create a strong junior base, the Indian Hockey Federation is embarking on a long-term programme with the World junior championship in 2009 and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in view.

The IHF has roped in Citi Group as sponsor for a youth development programme. The basics of the deal was worked out at a recent meeting in Mumbai attended by S.N. Masood of Citi Group, Priya Dutt M.P., IHF president K.P.S. Gill and secretary K. Jothikumaran.

According to the agreement, the IHF will select a core group of around 40 players in the 16-18 age group. All affiliated units of the IHF will participate in identifying the youth.

Besides this, plans are afoot to select a strong base of 80 to 100 players who will undergo periodic training. This part should be completed by April 30. All trials are to be finished by May 20, 2007.

The players selected are eligible for a stipend of Rs. 2,500-3,000 for four years. Besides, boarding, lodging, education, medical and kit requirements, will be met by the IHF and the sponsor. — Hockey Correspondent
