MANGALORE: The cooperative movement, which started in 1920, has become an important aspect of the Indian economy as it follows a sustained growth pattern and includes a large number of people as stakeholders said district in-charge Minister B. Nagaraj Shetty. Inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of the South Canara Co-operative Employees Cooperative Society here on Tuesday Mr. Shetty said the cooperative movement has given the country reach into rural areas. But it was also important for people involved in the cooperative movement to be committed to the cause of cooperation. Mr. Shetty said the cooperative spirit worked well in agriculture, rural development, fisheries, banking and manufacturing. He lauded the work carried on by the South Canara District Central Cooperative bank. Felicitating the society, MLA Abhayachandra Jain said Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have made giant strides in the cooperative sector and people should come together to strengthen the cooperative movement.
