Japan outplays India

NEW DELHI: India was outplayed by the second-seeded Japan in the last league match in pool `D' in the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup under-16 tennis tournament at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. India managed to win just eight games in all in three matches.

The seventh-seeded Indian team, however, qualified as the second team from the pool for the knock-out, and will face the third-seeded Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals.

In other quarterfinals, the top-seeded Australia will be challenged by the sixth-seeded Indonesia, the fourth-seeded Thailand will meet the eighth-seeded Korea while Japan will face a tricky opponent in the fifth-seeded China.

The results: Pool-A: Australia beat Korea 2-1; Philippines beat Pacific Oceania 3-0.

Pool-B: Thailand beat Indonesia 2-1; Chinese Taipei beat Malaysia 3-0.

Pool-C: Uzbekistan beat China 2-1; Hong Kong beat New Zealand 3-0.

Pool-D: Japan beat India 3-0 (Misaki Doi bt V. Archana 6-3, 6-0; Kurumi Nara bt Kyra Shroff 6-0, 6-1; Misaki Doi and Kurumi Nara bt Tanvi Shah and Kyra Shroff 6-1, 6-3); Singapore beat Sri Lanka 3-0.
