BANGALORE: Karnataka's Reshien Samuel and Tamil Nadu's C. Rajeshwari head the boys and girls' seedings as the Laabh Jewellers-AITA under-16 Championship Series tennis commences at the Sadashivanagar Club courts here from May 14. About 150 players from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, besides the host Karnataka will figure in the championship. The final is slated for May 18. The qualifying rounds will be held on May 12 and 13 at the Sadashivanagar Club courts as well as the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts from where eight will qualify for the main draw of 32. Besides 20 direct entries, there will be four wild cards in the main draw. The Sadashivanagar Club has been conducting the tournament for the last 20 years primarily in the age group categories to promote young talent. Sunil Yajaman will be the tournament director.

BDFA downs Shimoga
Host Bangalore District Football Association (BDFA) defeated Shimoga 5-1 in the inter-district football tournament that commenced here on Thursday. Kalandhar opened BDFA's account with a 55th minute and in the next minute, Arun Pandey scored for the home team. A minute later, Kalandhar again chipped in with a goal and later did an encore in the 65th minute to help his team lead 4-0. In the 80th minute, Kartik scored to round off BDFA's tally, while Suji Kumar converted a penalty in the 81st minute reduce the margin. In another match, Kolar and Davangere districts were locked in a goalless draw.
Harshvardhan shines
Devanga Union, powered by some splendid shooting by Harshvardhan, quelled the challenge of YMMA in the boys' section of the State junior basketball championship, which commenced at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium outdoor courts here on Thursday. Devanga Union won 48-31. YMMA girls too fared miserably against Bharath Sports Union and lost tamely 3-33. The results: Boys: Vimanapura 52 (Praveen Kumar 11) bt Pattabhiramnagar 18; Devanga Union 48 (Harshvardhan 21) bt YMMA 31 (Sachin 11). Girls: Bharath SU 33 bt YMMA 3; IBBC 37 bt Dr. Ambedkar SC 21 (Deepa 14).
Easy for Anand Sweets
Openers Manish (65 not out) and N. Varun (57 not out) shared an unbeaten 144-run partnership to help Anand Sweets defeat Jayanagar Colts by 10 wickets in a M. Vishweshwaraiah Memorial under-17 cricket tournament match here recently. Jayanagar Colts scored 142 and Anand Sweets surpassed the target in 12 overs. The scores: Jayanagar Colts 142 in 19.4 overs lost to Anand Sweets 144 without loss in 12 overs (Manish 65 not out, N. Varun 57 not out). Jungle Lodges XI 147 for eight in 25 overs (Arpith 71, R. Sudhir four for 23) lost to Azad-SVCA 148 for two in 18.4 overs (Anirban 76 not out).
Chess championship
The United Karnataka Chess Association (Bangalore) will be conducting the second Malleswaram Association Karnataka State FIDE-rated chess championship at the association premises from May 15 to 20. The top four from this championship will represent Karnataka in the National `B' chess championship to be held at Dindigul from June 10 to 20. Entries close on May 12.
