Modern laboratory coming up at Uppal

For conducting translational research and help finding cures to life-threatening diseases

HYDERABAD: A state-of-the-art facility for conducting translational research and help finding cures to life-threatening diseases is being set up here by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in collaboration with the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

The new facility, coming up at Uppal, will try to reduce the time gap between the discoveries made in basic research and the pace of their adoption by clinicians, according to CCMB director Lalji Singh. The lab will be one of its kinds in medical biotechnology in the country and will house facilities for cell and tissue engineering, regulatory RNA, stem cell research and functional MRI. It will start functioning in three years.

Dr. Singh told The Hindu that one of main focus areas of the research would be hereditary diseases. He said that CCMB had already signed a memorandum of understanding with NIMS to set up the laboratory, which would be dedicated, specifically to develop new methodologies and procedures for isolation and delivery of stem cells for therapeutic purposes. The State Government had allotted five acres for the facility at the Uppal Industrial area, (CCMB Annexe 2) and civil works were in progress.
