Dance competition

HYDERABAD: The Tamil Nadu Dance Association will conduct the South Zone Open National (classical, folk and western) Dance Championship for women from May 25 to 27 at Sri Vidhya Mandir Secondary School, Sivajinagar, Salem. Attempt to steal from hundi; 2 held

TIRUMALA: Two persons including a ten-year-old boy were caught red handed when they were trying to steal money from a mobile hundi kept inside the temple complex on Friday night. The police also recovered Rs.3,800 from them. The duo was identified as Sekhar (20) native of Prakasam district and Vijay (10) native of Mulbagal in Karnataka. Student ends life

HYDERABAD: Upset over securing less marks in the examination, a tenth-standard student committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her house at Sanathnagar here on Friday. According to relatives, K. Sumalatha (17) was depressed after results of Secondary School Certificate examination were announced on Thursday. She took the drastic step when the rest of the family was away from the house. On hearing her screams, neighbours shifted her to Gandhi Hospital where she was declared brought dead. — Staff Reporter

SI gheraoed

ADILABAD: Sub Inspector of Police of Laxmanchanda mandal Nagi Reddy was gheraoed by villagers from Chintalchanda on Saturday when he allegedly raised his hand to beat sarpanch Laxmi. The SI had seized a tractor load of rice being transported out of the village on suspicion of it being smuggled out. The rice belonged to a local fair price shop dealer. — Staff Reporter

Chittoor: Minister for Agriculture Raghuveera Reddy said that the Congress will give "proper recognition" to its workers and stand by them during difficult times. He was addressing a party workers' meeting here on Saturday.

Seminar postponed

Hyderabad: The conference on `Dissemination of space technology for agricultural development in the State', scheduled to be held at Anantapur on May 27, has been postponed to July 6. Severe heat wave

WARANGAL: Life is becoming unbearable with the severe heat wave sweeping the district while the average temperature remains around 45 degree Celsius. The blazing sun, coupled with the hot winds is making lives intolerable. The residents are finding it very difficult with hot winds blowing. City roads are wearing a deserted look. Lok Satta chief's tour

HYDERABAD: The Lok Satta Party's national coordinator Jayaprakash Narayan will undertake a five-day tour of East Godavari district beginning May 13. Farmers' plea against land acquisition

Kakinada: Three farmers of Cheduvada village in Kajuluru mandal of Thallarevu constituency - Mir Raza Abbas, Mir Khasim Saheb and Karri Panasarama Reddy - have expressed resentment over the move of revenue authorities to acquire their agricultural land for allotment of house sites to weaker sections under the Indiramma Adarsa village scheme, leaving vast extent of available government land. At a press conference on Saturday, they said that authorities were particular on acquiring their land. They urged the Collector to intervene and render justice. - Correspondent

Launch of NREGS works on May 18

Kakinada: The execution of various works identified under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) will be launched in the district on May 18, according to Collector M. Subrahmanyam. Inaugurating the two-day training programme for technical assistants on execution of NREGS works here on Saturday, he asked the trainees to extend their support to MDOs in imple-mentation of the scheme. - Correspondent
